SawaSawa Shopper · El Niño 2026/27 Guide
Be ready before the rains: your El Niño preparedness plan for Kenya
A calm, practical guide to protecting your family's health, staying safe around floodwater and stocking up on quality UK gear before the October–December rains arrive.

Forecasters are clear that the 2026/27 El Niño is shaping up to be a significant one. The World Meteorological Organization puts the chance of El Niño lasting until February 2027 at nearly 100% and expects it to reach very strong intensity. In Kenya, the Ministry of Health cites a 99% probability of above-normal rainfall for October–December 2026, and says the rains could continue into February 2027.
Preparing early is the best way to keep everyday life running when the rain comes. This guide covers three areas: a health contingency plan, flood safety and the essential gear worth buying now, with direct links to trusted UK retailers.
El Niño 2026/27: what the forecast means for Kenya
The October–December 2026 short rains forecast expects above-average rainfall over more than 80% of the country, with long wet spells and occasional isolated storms. Temperatures are also expected to be warmer than usual, especially along the coast.
When the rains are expected
- Western Kenya, Lake Victoria Basin and parts of the Rift Valley: rain continuing from September into January (The Star).
- Nairobi, Central Kenya and the eastern highlands: onset in the second to third week of October.
- Coast and most north-eastern counties: onset in the second to third week of October; south-eastern lowlands from the third to fourth week.
Areas needing extra attention
The Ministry of Health has highlighted Mandera, Wajir, Marsabit and Garissa in the north-east; Kitui, Makueni and Machakos in the south-east; and Lamu, Kilifi, Kwale, Tana River, Taita Taveta and Mombasa on the coast. It also named the Kano Plains, Budalang'i, the Tana Delta and landslide-prone areas in Murang'a, Nyeri, Meru, the Gusii Highlands, West Pokot and the Rift Valley escarpment. Nation adds that informal settlements in Nairobi and Mombasa are at risk of urban flooding.
Tip: a seasonal forecast does not mean every county will flood or that it will rain every day. Check the Kenya Meteorological Department's 24-hour, 5-day and 7-day forecasts and your county's updates regularly.
Your El Niño health contingency plan
Heavy rain can contaminate water, create breeding grounds for mosquitoes and make clinics harder to reach. Kenya's health ministry has warned of higher risks of cholera, typhoid and other diarrhoeal diseases, malaria, dengue, Rift Valley fever, injuries and drowning, and it has issued an advisory to all 47 counties (Kenya News Agency). A simple household plan makes a real difference.
1. Safe water & hygiene
- Drink only safe water. Boil or treat it whenever you are unsure.
- Wash hands with soap before eating and after using the toilet.
- Cook food thoroughly and keep it covered.
- Use safe toilets and keep children away from floodwater.
2. Mosquito protection
- Sleep under treated mosquito nets, every night.
- Clear stagnant water from gutters, tyres, buckets and pots.
- Use repellent in the evening and early morning.
- Seek care quickly for any persistent fever.
3. Medicines & vulnerable people
- Keep prescribed medicines, a first-aid kit, oral rehydration salts (ORS) and water-treatment products at home.
- Ask your doctor or pharmacist about holding a few extra weeks' supply of regular medication.
- Plan extra care for children, pregnant women, older relatives, people with disabilities and anyone living alone.
Get medical help immediately for sudden watery diarrhoea, repeated vomiting, severe weakness, difficulty drinking, reduced urination, bloody diarrhoea or persistent fever. While you arrange care, give ORS if the person is awake and able to drink, and keep breastfeeding babies and young children (Ministry of Health guidance).

Flood safety: before, during and after
Government advice is simple: never try to cross moving water. The State Department has warned against crossing flooded rivers, roads and bridges, and against walking or driving through moving floodwater.
Before the rains
- Find out whether your home is near a river, drainage channel or unstable slope.
- Agree on a family meeting point on higher ground and a route to get there.
- Put ID cards, title deeds, school and medical records in waterproof dry bags.
- Raise electronics, food and bedding off the floor.
- Keep lanterns, torches and power banks fully charged.
During heavy rain
- Do not walk, cycle or drive through moving water. Even shallow water can knock you over.
- Keep away from riverbanks, bridges and drainage channels.
- Keep children indoors and away from flooded areas.
- On hillsides, watch for cracks, tilting trees or muddy water, which can signal a landslide.
- Move early if local officials advise it.
After the water drops
- Treat floodwater as contaminated. Wear boots and gloves when cleaning.
- Throw away food that has touched floodwater.
- Clean and disinfect water tanks, surfaces and utensils.
- Have electrics checked before switching the power back on.
- Watch the whole family for fever or diarrhoea.

The Ministry of Health has flagged Mandera, Wajir, Marsabit, Garissa, Kitui, Makueni, Machakos and the coastal counties, plus the Kano Plains (Kisumu), Budalang'i (Busia), the Tana Delta, and landslide-prone slopes in Murang'a, Nyeri, Meru, the Gusii Highlands, West Pokot and the Rift Valley escarpment.
